Can Chiropractic Adjustments Help Reduce Painkiller Dependence?

  • A study of 13,384 subjects has found significantly reduced use of opioid pain management medication in participants undergoing chiropractic adjustments
  • Prescriptions for all forms of opioid-based medications were found to be reduced among study participants
  • The study bolsters evidence for chiropractic care being effective at helping treat and manage chronic pain effectively

According to a new study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, adults in New Hampshire (USA), have been found to file fewer prescriptions for opioid-based pain medications when treated by local chiropractors.

Studying over thirteen thousand people being treated for non-cancer related lower back pain, those treated using chiropractic adjustments were found to file 55% fewer pain medication prescriptions. Patients not treated using chiropractic adjustments meanwhile were found to file the same number of prescriptions for opioid-based painkillers as usual.

Could a Chiropractor in Peterborough Help You Manage Your Pain?

Due to the debilitating nature of chronic back pain, millions of sufferers around the world are reliant on intense painkillers just to live day to day. In fact in the United States, over 650,000 prescriptions for highly addictive opioid-based pain medications are filed daily.

Needless to say, the idea of long-term reliance on opioid drugs is far from appealing to most people. Findings by the Council on Chiropractic Guidelines funded US study, might, therefore, finally encourage more people to start considering chiropractic adjustments as a possible alternative.

Can a Chiropractor in Peterborough Help Treat Addiction?

Because almost half of all pain medication is prescribed for chronic back pain, a 55% reduction in need of medication in chiropractic patients is hugely significant. It is important to note, however, that evidence doesn’t yet support the idea that chiropractic adjustments can help directly treat opioid dependency.

How Can You Benefit?

Arguably the most exciting facet of the recent New Hampshire study regards the fact that suffers from back pain don’t need to wait to benefit from findings directly. Instead, if you are in pain, all you need to do is reach out to a clinic like Peterborough Chiropractic, to see if you too could benefit from better relief by virtue of a treatment appointment.
